Provo (2023)
Liz (Emma Thatcher) is a perpetually hungover ex-Mormon living recklessly in Chicago. She gets a jolt when she finds out that her estranged father, a devout Mormon with a dark past, is on his deathbed and hopes to reconcile. He sends Liz a haunting portrait of Joseph Smith, the founding prophet of the LDS Church. When Liz’s current friend-with-benefits, Geoffrey (Hunter Bryant), sees the family heirloom stashed under her bed, he offers to join her on a road trip to seek some closure. Hoping to give the old man a piece of her mind one last time, Liz agrees, and they embark on a journey to Provo, Utah. What follows is an idiosyncratic love story, a bitingly funny ode to the oddities of roadside America, and ultimately a lesson in forgiveness. Thatcher wrote, directed, starred in, and edited this debut feature film – executive produced by her sister Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets, Boogeyman, The Book of Boba Fett).
